Project management: Development of an electrically assisted trailer

Our customer, one of Europe's leading manufacturers of lorry trailers and semi-trailers, commissioned us with the project management for the development of an innovative electrically assisted trailer. The aim was to significantly reduce CO2 emissions and thus fulfil the strict EU requirements for 2025.

Challenges and solution approach

The development of an electrically assisted lorry trailer presented us with a complex challenge. Conventional optimisation measures such as aerodynamic improvements or lightweight construction were not enough to achieve the ambitious CO2 reduction targets. Instead, we had to develop a completely new drive concept for trailers - an endeavour that went far beyond the company's previous experience.

To master this challenge, we implemented a multi-dimensional approach. Firstly, we established an agile way of working in the pre-development team. This enabled us to react flexibly to new findings and refine the concept iteratively. At the same time, we sought close collaboration with innovative start-ups and experienced suppliers in order to benefit from their expertise and exploit synergies.

Another key to success was the continuous implementation of technology and market analyses. This helped us to stay at the cutting edge of technology and recognise potential opportunities and risks at an early stage. At the same time, we attached great importance to building up cross-domain expertise within the company. Through targeted training and knowledge transfer, we were able to build up the necessary expertise to drive forward the development of the electrically assisted trailer in the long term.

This holistic approach enabled us to tackle the complexity of this project appropriately and lay the foundations for successful product development.

Project progress

The development of the electrically assisted lorry trailer is an ambitious long-term project that began 18 months ago. Since then, we have made significant progress and are currently in the decisive concept phase.

In this phase, we are concretising the technical specifications, evaluating various drive concepts and developing detailed implementation strategies. So far, we have completed over 200 consulting days in which we have worked intensively with the development team, start-ups and suppliers. Each day of consultation has brought us closer to the goal of an innovative and efficient trailer concept.

The project is scheduled to run for at least four years, which emphasises the complexity and innovative nature of the project. This long-term perspective allows us to thoroughly think through and optimise all aspects of the development. It also gives us the necessary room for manoeuvre to react to technological advances and changing market conditions.

In the coming phases, we will move from conceptualisation to concrete implementation. This includes the development of prototypes, extensive test phases and finally the preparation of series production.

Results and benefits

Thanks to our comprehensive project management, we were able to generate multi-layered benefits for our customer that go far beyond pure product development. A key success was the establishment of a completely new area of expertise within the company. This enables our customer to position itself as an innovation leader in the field of electrically assisted trailers and to use this expertise for future developments.

At the same time, we have significantly professionalised the product development processes. By introducing agile methods and integrating state-of-the-art development tools, we have increased efficiency and improved our ability to adapt to changing requirements. This will also have a positive impact on future projects.
Another important aspect was the establishment and management of an interdisciplinary development team. This team now brings together experts from various specialist areas and forms a solid basis for innovative solutions, not only for the current project but also for future challenges.

With our support, the foundations have been laid for a pioneering product. The innovative electrically assisted trailer will give our customer a decisive competitive advantage in the changing market for commercial vehicles. At the same time, the product makes an important contribution to reducing emissions in road freight transport, which not only fulfils regulatory requirements but also strengthens our customer's sustainability profile.

Conclusion

To summarise, it can be said that our involvement went far beyond pure product development. We have helped our customer to prepare for the challenges of the future by not only developing an innovative product, but also by strengthening internal structures and competences in the long term. In the long term, this will be reflected in an improved market position and increased innovative strength for our customer.
