EU regulation on artificial intelligence

The AI Act sets clear rules to prevent misuse, protect fundamental rights and enable innovation at the same time. The regulation is based on a risk-based approach: the higher the risk of an AI application, the stricter the regulations. Here is an overview of the most important points:

• Aim of the AI Act: Ensure that AI applications are not abused and that fundamental rights are protected.
• Freedom for innovation: Science and industry should be able to continue to innovate despite regulation.
• Risk-based approach: The higher the risk of an AI application, the stricter the legal requirements.
• Prohibited AI systems: Manipulative AI for the targeted influencing of behaviour and AI-based "social scoring" (evaluation of people according to their behaviour).
• Transparency obligation: Artificially generated or edited content (audio, images, videos) must be labelled as such.
• Regulation of high-risk AI: Concerns critical infrastructure, employment, healthcare and banking and strict requirements for authorisation on the EU market.
• Low risk: Low risk AI applications are subject to limited transparency and information requirements.
